An Ode to Running

It's dark outside
I sneak out the house
trying to be quiet as a mouse
Ipod? Headphones? Cell Phone? Check!
This might be my best run yet.

Optimistic as I start
I can already hear my heart

Oh how I love you South Bound Lakeshore Path
With your many pretty features
Museums, Beaches, Harbors and Parks
filled with loads of woodland creatures

The Lake glistens, winks, and smiles in the sun
The waves crash magically
I never take forgranted how beautiful; my run

I smile and say hello to all the others I pass
It's a simple test to see if I'm running out of gas
My knees hurt these days, is it because I'm too heavy?
If I try to run this much and DIET, I will for sure turn crazy

Half way point, time to turn around
Can't believe I'm marathon bound
This time I take all for myself is good for me and for my spouse
To burn off energy good and bad
To be able to run, I'm forever glad

Had a tough 7 miler today. Started composing this poem in my head to help pass the time. My KNEES HURT. So that is a new physical barrier to overcome, sigh. Not sure what is going on there.

Missed my mileage goals this month by about 8 miles. Decided to be judicious about not overdoing it before my PT test. Which I PASSED by the way! :-) Felt SO amazing to have that cloud not hanging over my head anymore. My pushups can use more work, sit-ups too. The run? 2 miles of sheer hell. Thank god I'm in decent shape there. It was like 35 degrees and we ran in winds around 35 MPH. I rocked it though. Must have been the pressure. My time was 16:30. Not bad considering how nasty it was.

This month brings my first race of the season! Hopefully this body stays in one piece. Madison Half Marathon in 24 days! Woop Woop.

great poem. i love it. i'm sorry you're having knee problems... i've been having issues, too, for about a month now, and i know how frustrating it is, especially when you've been working so hard. let's just face it... running is really bad for your body! mine started in my left knee... i thought it was my IT band, and then i thought it was really awful shin splints, and now i've decided that it might be best to just amputate. it sucks. looks like we might be dragging one another across the finish line on the 25th?? nah...

you can do it! I love the Therma Care heat bands . I had super bad shin splits one night and I put the band on my leg and you keep it all on night and they were so much better after.

Ice, ice, and more ice...when you kids get done running ice em down. Gallon zip lock bag 3/4 full of ice, add enough water to cover. If that is too cold, bag of frozen peas. You can re-use the peas, just mark the bag. Old coach once said the knee is Gods greatest joke on mankind. Oh and 2 shots of jack every 15 minutes til you don't care if you have knees or not. Remember this. Pain is just a figment of your imagination which is real...

yay! congrats on passing your PT test (not that I thought you wouldn't!)

and I loved this poem. I could picture you running and writing it in your head. I just started running too (nothing like you-only a few miles every other day), but I absolutely love it. feels so good!

good luck on your first race- you rock, b :)

what a great poem. You've inspired me to start running again. I'm not a good runner and I've never liked running and still don't but it's something I've always wanted to conquer. My goal someday is to run in the Chicago marathon before I get old like Todd, I better get to work! Keep it up - you are now my inspiration!

Vicki - you have NO idea what your post means to me. It means a lot that I could inspire someone to run! I am really slipping behind these last couple of weeks. Knowing that you're rooting for me will make me get my butt in gear. You can do it! I got to stay motivated :-) Thanks for the comment.
